Monitoring the Nation’s Supply and Demand
for Blood
In response to growing concern about the adequacy of the
Nation's blood supply and faced with limited information
upon which to respond effectively to blood shortages,
the United States Department of Health and Human Services
(DHHS) commissioned this study to prepare the way for
a comprehensive, federally-managed blood monitoring system.
EconSys evaluated the Federal government’s existing
capabilities to monitor the supply and utilization of
whole blood and blood components. On the basis of this
evaluation, EconSys developed a target plan and implementation
framework for a new blood monitoring system designed to
enhance DHHS information-gathering and policy-making.
This plan is currently being used as the blueprint for
the Blood Availability and Safety Information System (BASIS),
which is currently under development. EconSys will provide
technical services and oversight during the development,
testing and implementation of BASIS.
